Influential Power

It's amazing how much influence and power you have, or can be given. Some of this power, however, may be positive, or more harmful than you realize.

 

I was reminded of influential power just the other day when I jokingly remarked to a colleague that all they seemed to do throughout the day was eat. The response from my colleague, "You are going to give me a complex.", reawakened my thinking that some of us can negatively influence people without even being aware that we are doing so.

 

As another example, take a simple facial expression, a smile, and a one-word greeting, 'hello'. It is astounding how much impact this simple greeting can have on a work colleague or friend, or to a total stranger when you pass them on the street.  A simple smile and an hello can do wonders for someone's spirit who may be a little down at the moment, feeling a bit unappreciated, or feeling all alone with their own issues or concerns.

 

Three points need to be made here. First, is that you cannot influence others unless they give you the power to do so because we all have a choice. Second, we can choose to be influenced or affected by others or their actions, or we can choose not to. Just like you can lead a horse to water, you cannot make it drink unless it wants to. And, third, some of what we may consider to be our most innocent actions or lack of actions can help or hinder.

 

Be aware of what you say and how you act. You may have been given more influential power than you realize.

Beyond The Dream

Have you ever had a dream? I'm not talking about a dream that we all experience while we sleep. I'm talking about a dream that shows a new career or pursuit.

 

Most people have these kinds of dreams and some people have the same one over and over again sometimes consuming their every waking moment. Is there anything wrong with this kind of dream?

 

Some people might suggest that to have a recurring dream that depicts a new reality is simply daydreaming where this dream only acts as a way to fill the void from a less than satisfying job and provides a necessary escape from their current reality making it somewhat bearable. The interesting and more significant point though, is that this dream may be what should be turned into a day-to-day reality that provides a more pleasing and fulfilling life.

 

So, why not invest the energy wasted on dreaming by developing a plan that will move you closer and closer to what you really desire? Some reasons for not starting is just that; you never start; you never take any steps whatsoever in taking any steps or actions. If you find yourself in this situation, one positive action is to talk with someone you know who has changed their career, someone who has had to make sustained effort to change despite obstacles or circumstances. Why?

 

Simple. The person who has taken action to move beyond an unsatisfying career has learned what it takes; has developed a set of procedures; has formulated an action plan; and one who has learned to overcome obstacles. Wouldn't it be a lot easier to ask them for guidance or suggestions than going it alone, or, worse still, staying mired in current circumstances where the only positive is your dream?

Thanksgiving has always been for me a time to be thankful for all the blessings in my life.  But how do we live thanksgiving? I found the answer to that question in an article written by Wilfred A. Peterson called, The Art of Thanksgiving.  In this article he talks about acts of thanksliving.  To quote from this piece, Mr Peterson writes:

 

"The art of thanksgiving is thanksliving.  It is gratitude in action.  It is applying Albert Schweitzer's philosophy: 'In gratitude for your own good fortune you must render in return some sacrifice of your life for the other life.'

 

The article goes on to give examples of what how we could live in a thanksliving way:

-          By living your life triumphantly

-          By being grateful for all who have helped you by you doing things for others

-          By striving to make others happy

-          By helping to be an inspiration to others

-          By living each day to the fullest

-          By using your talents and obligations to be invested for the common good

-          By facing the challenges of life as a challenge for achievement

-          By enjoying what you have and sharing it with others

 

Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for all we have, but thanksliving is a way of life that if implemented could improve the quality of life not only for you and me, but for others.  Do you live in a thanks giving way?
