However, things will not change for women going through the menopause at a normal age as poor egg quality will still be a major obstacle. Angelina and Andy The cult of celebrity catapulted two diseases into the public eye this year – breast cancer and stroke. Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy after her doctors said she had an 87% chance of developing breast cancer during her lifetime. She has a mutation in her DNA, called BRCA1, which greatly increases the odds of both breast and ovarian cancer. In a newspaper article she said: “I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity…for any woman reading this, I hope it helps you to know you have options.” BBC presenter Andrew Marr had a stroke after an intensive rowing machine session and a year of “heavily overworking”. It put a spotlight on the standard of care for stroke patients and raised the question why do healthy people have strokes? He says he’s “lucky to be alive” and is back presenting, although the stroke has affected “the whole left hand side of my body”.

A Mental-health Overhaul

Posted: 26 Dec 2013 12:44 AM PST

Dec. 25, 2013 3:56 p.m. ET A year has passed since the Newtown massacre, and Americans this month marked the somber moment. The most fitting tribute Congress could pay the 26 victims would be to return in January to take up Pennsylvania Representative Tim Murphy’s thoughtful overhaul of federal mental-health policies. Severe mental illness is the common link among the recent mass shootings, and for decades the political class has ignored the systemic dysfunction in a mental-health system that fails the sickest. Getting to the root of this problem…

Ap Poll: Obama Health Care Overhaul Top 2013 Story

Posted: 23 Dec 2013 10:55 PM PST

1 launch of open enrollment would be a showcase for the upside of Obama’s much-debated overhaul. Instead, the website became a symbol of dysfunction, providing Republicans and late-night comics with ammunition, and worrying the president’s Democratic allies. The site gradually improved, but a wave of cancellation notices from insurers undercut Obama’s oft-repeated promise that people who liked their existing coverage could keep it. BOSTON MARATHON BOMBING: In seconds, a scene of celebration transformed into one of carnage, as two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon in April. Three people were killed and more than 260 injured, including at least 16 who lost limbs.

Obama Lifts Health Mandate For Those With Canceled Plans

Posted: 22 Dec 2013 10:05 PM PST

1, according to Obama administration figures. Insurers said the exemptions may keep younger, healthier people from buying new coverage through Obamacare, a demographic that is needed to bring balance to the new government-run insurance marketplaces. This latest rule change could cause significant instability in the marketplace and lead to further confusion and disruption for consumers, Karen Ignagni , the president of Americas Health Insurance Plans, the industrys Washington-based lobbying group, said in an e-mail from a spokesman. President Barack Obama has been issuing a flurry of last-minute policy changes to give people more time to sign up for his signature domestic policy initiative following a botched rollout of key programs, delays of others and political backlash over the cost and effects of the law. Republican Response The Fate of Obamacare The latest exemption from the laws individual mandate would last a year and potentially longer for consumers granted hardship exceptions, according to the guidance issued by CMSs Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight. The sad reality is that when the law takes effect come Jan. 1, more Americans will be without coverage under Obamacare than one year ago, Representative Fred Upton , a Michigan Republican who is chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said in an e-mail.
