POEM FOR YOUR WEEK
Poet:  Ellen M. H. Gates

If you cannot on the ocean

Sail among the swiftest fleet,

Rocking on the highest billows,
Laughing at the storms you meet;

You can stand among the sailors,

Anchored yet within the bay,

You can lend a hand to help them

As they launch their boats away.

If you are too weak to journey

Up the mountain steep and high,

You can stand within the valley.

While the multitudes go by;

You can chant in happy measure.

As they slowly pass along;

Though they may forget the singer

They will not forget the song.

If you cannot in the harvest

Garner up the richest sheaves

Many a grain, both ripe and golden,

Oft the careless reaper leaves;

Go and glean among the briars

Growing rank against the wall,

For it may be that their shadow

Hides the heaviest grain of all.

Do not, then, stand idly waiting,

For some greater work to do;

Fortune is a lazy goddess,

She will never come to you.

Go and toil in any vineyard,

Do not fear to do or dare,

If you want a field of labor.

You can find it anywhere.

STORY FOR YOUR WEEK

A Little Bit Every Day

By Catherine Pulsifer

Recently I had a conversation with a person who has a long-term goal that will take a few years to achieve. The individual seemed overwhelmed with the size of the goal and was getting discouraged. Their focus was on all the things they need to do to reach the goal and their comment to me was, "I just can't do it". It reminded me of the story of the clock that had been running and running:

This clock had sat on the mantle for years. And it ran and ran.

One day, the clock began to think about how many times it had to tick during the year. It counted up the seconds - it would have to tick 31,536,000 times a year.

The clock seemed overwhelmed - "I can't do it, that is just too much." So the clock stopped ticking.

Then somebody reminded the clock that it didn't have to tick the 31,536,000 seconds all at one time, but rather one tick at a time.

The clock then realized this was okay and started ticking again!

When we set our goals, it is good to visualize the end results. But, getting to our goal is doing a little bit every day; not doing it all at once. So the next time you find yourself overwhelmed by your goal, remember the clock and the number of ticks - do a little bit every day and over time you will reach your goal. Believe me, reaching your goal is worth it!

QUOTES for YOUR WEEK:

You have to set goals that are almost out of reach. If you set a goal that is attainable without much work or thought, you are stuck with something below your true talent and potential.

Steve Garvey

The tragedy of life doesn't lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goals to reach.

Benjamin Mays

In achieving your goals, you may run into roadblocks. Don't let that stop you, go around, over, or under. If you are committed to your goal you will find a way.

Catherine Pulsifer

Our plans miscarry because they have no aim. When a man does not know what harbour he is making for, no wind is the right wind.

Seneca

Do it now. You become successful the moment you start moving toward a worthwhile goal.

 Author Unknown

In life, as in football, you won't go far unless you know where the goalposts are.

 Arnold H. Glasgow

STORY FOR YOUR WEEK

Your Keepers

By Author Unknown

I grew up in the fifties with practical parents- a Mother, God love her, who washed aluminium foil after she cooked in it, then reused it. She was the original recycle queen, before they had a name for it. A Father who was happier getting old shoes fixed than buying new ones.

Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away. I can see them now, Dad in trousers, tee shirt and a hat and Mom in a housedress, lawn mower in one hand, dishtowel in the other.

It was the time for fixing things - a curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep. It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing, reheating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful; waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more.

But then my Mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more.

Sometimes, what we care about most goes away... never to return.

So, while we have it, it's best we love it, and care for it; fix it when it's broken, and heal it when it's sick. This is true for marriage, old radios, and old cars, children with bad report cards, and dogs with bad hips, and aging parents, and grandparents.

There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special, so keep them close!
