U-m To Run Wayne County Medical Examiner Office | The Detroit News Posted: 04 Nov 2014 10:48 AM PST The three-year, $16.7-million contract will allow the county greater access to pathologists, advanced laboratory facilities and forensics through UM, county officials said. The university, in turn, will be able to expand its pathology programs and recruit and train physicians. Medical Examiner Dr. Carl Schmidt said his office will benefit from having the university associated with it. The big picture here is even though were a small part of the countys operation were also one that can generate a lot of bad news if something difficult happens, Schmidt said. It will be one of the few departments in the country able to provide all pathology services under one roof. The county says it would save money under the plan because to be able to offer services comparable with what will be offered under UM, the county would have to spend millions. Under the change, the 19 employees in the Medical Examiners Office will be offered positions with UM and become employees of the University of Michigan Health System. |
