They don’t expect to have to wait for a second ambulance because the first one on the scene has “health issues” of its own. But that’s exactly what happened to a town resident last year because of the condition of the aging vehicles in town, according to EMS Chief Don Smith . Luckily, Smith said, the patient, who had injured his back, was not suffering from a life-threatening condition. “It did not impact patient care other than they had to wait on scene while in pain,” Smith said. While the impact to the patient was fortunately minimal, the impact to the town and its EMS service was much greater — it made Monroe officials realize it was time to address its aging fleet of ambulances. Of the town’s three ambulances, two were about six years old, and the other had been in use for roughly nine years.
