Be Inspired by This Famous Person
Anne Frank

Be inspired by the words of Anne Frank who suffered challenges that most of us could never imagine.  She was born in Germany on June 12, 1929. As a German-Jew she was force to go into hiding during the Holocaust.  Anne and her family spent 25 months hiding in rooms about her fathers office only to be betrayed to the Nazis. Along with her family she was deported to a Nazi concentration camps where Anne died of typhus nine months later (March 1945).  She was only fifteen years old.

Her dairy was first published in 1947 and has been read by millions.  We hope her words encourage you and inspire you.  Despite her age, she had wisdom that most of us can only hope for.

Inspirational words of wisdom from Anne Frank:

I keep my ideals, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death.
Anne Frank

The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be.
Anne Frank

The final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands.
Anne Frank

Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.
Anne Frank

Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands.
Anne Frank

And finally I twist my heart round again, so that the bad is on the outside and the good is on the inside, and keep on trying to find a way of becoming what I would so like to be, and could be, if there weren't any other people living in the world.
Anne Frank

I must uphold my ideals, for perhaps the time will come when I shall be able to carry them out.
Anne Frank

Whoever is happy will make others happy, too.
Anne Frank

Everyone has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!
Anne Frank

We all live with the objective of being happy, our lives are all different and yet the same.
Anne Frank

It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart.
Anne Frank

THOUGHT FOR YOUR WEEK
Positive Inspirational Note
By Catherine Pulsifer

The most positive inspirational note I ever received was from a good friend who has been a mentor, a supporter, and an inspiration to me.  This friend has had some very challenging issues in their life, but they always look at the positive side of every situation.  No matter what the issue they are able to find the good in it.  After years of working with many set backs, they continued to persevere and they have achieved success.

The message that they sent me inspired and motivated me.  What they did was write a poem to me to encourage me not to give up, to continue..  What was neat about this note is that they took quotes and put it in a letter to me.  Here is the positive inspirational note:

Persistence prevails when all else fails.  Author Unknown
Never, never, never give up.  Winston Churchill
How long should you try? Until.  Jim Rohn
A jug fills drop by drop.  Buddha

Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.  Bo Jackson
Choosing a goal and sticking to it changes everything.  Scott Reed
Goals determine what you're going to be.  Julius Erving
Whoever wants to reach a distant goal must take small steps.  Helmut Schmidt

There are always flowers for those who want to see them." Henri Matisse
Look at the sunny side of everything.  Christian D. Larsen
Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power.  William James
Positive things happen to positive people. Sarah Beeny

Don't be afraid to go out on a limb. That's where the fruit is. H. Jackson Browne
Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.  John Wooden
Men are born to succeed, not fail. Henry David Thoreau
Life is not the wick or the candle - it is the burning. Author Unknown

My hope in sharing this note with you is that it will inspire and motivate you to be all that you can be; that even when you face challenges to persevere; to encourage you to set your goals and stay focused on achieving them; and a reminder to realize that you are born to succeed. And, most importantly as you work to achieve your goals enjoy life!

Jim Rohn

"Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So love the people who treat you right, forget about the ones who don't and believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. Nobody said that it'd be easy, they just promised it would be worth it."
Author Unknown

"Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, cause hate in your heart will consume you too."
Will Smith

"In life you can never be too kind or too fair; everyone you meet is carrying a heavy load. When you go through your day expressing kindness and courtesy to all you meet, you leave behind a feeling of warmth and good cheer, and you help alleviate the burdens everyone is struggling with."
Brian Tracy

"There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them."

POEM FOR YOUR WEEK
I Shall Be Glad
Poet: Grace Noll Crowell

If I can put new hope within the heart
Of one who has lost hope,
If I can help a brother up
Some difficult long slope
That seems too steep for tired feet to go,
If I can help him climb
Into the light upon the hill's far crest,
I shall begrudge no time
Or strength that I spend,
For well I know
How great may be his need.
If I can help through any
Darkened hour, I shall be glad indeed.

For I recall how often I have been
Distressed, distraught, dismayed,
And hands have reached to help,
And voices called
That kept me unafraid.
If I can share this help that
I have had, God knows I shall be glad.

POEM FOR YOUR WEEK
The Tides of Providence
by Patience Strong

It's not what you gather, but what you sow,
That gives the heart a warming glow.
It's not what you get, but what you give,
Decides the kind of life you live.

It's not what you have,
But what you spare.
It's not what you take,
But what you share
That pays the greater dividend
And makes you richer in the end.

It's not what you spend upon yourself
Or hide away upon a shelf,
That brings a blessing for the day.
It's what you scatter by the way.

A wasted effort it may seem.
But what you cast upon the stream
Comes back to you recompense
Upon the tides of providence.

STORY FOR YOUR WEEK
A Lesson in Life
By Author Unknown

One young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position in a big company.  He passed the first interview; the director did the last interview, made the last decision.

The director discovered from the CV, that the youth's academic result was excellent. The director asked, "Did you obtain any scholarship in school?" and the youth answered "no". The director asked, " Is it your father who paid for your school fees?" the youth answered, "My father passed away when I was one year old, it is my mother who paid for my school fees." The director asked, "Where did your mother work?" the youth answered, "My mother worked as a cleaner." The director requested the youth to show him his hands. The youth showed a pair of hand that were smooth and perfect.

The director asked, "Did you ever help your mother wash the clothes?" The youth answered, "Never, my mother always wanted me to study and read more books, furthermore, my mother can wash clothes faster than me." The director said, "I have a request, when you go home today, look at your mother's hand, and then come and see me tomorrow morning." The youth felt that as the chance of landing the job is high, when he went back, he happily wanted to see his mother's hand. His mother felt strange, happy but mixed with fear, she showed her hands to the kid. The youth looked at his mother's hand slowly, his tears rolled down he cheeks.  He never noticed that his mother's hands were so wrinkled, and that there are so many bruises in her hand.

This is the first time the youth realized and experienced that it was this pair of hand that washed clothes everyday to earn him the school fees, the bruises in the mother's hand is the price that the mother paid for his graduation and academic excellence and probably his future. After looking at him Mum's hands, the youth quietly cleaned all remaining clothes for his mother. That night, mother and son talked for a very long time.

Next morning, the youth went to the director's office. The director noticed the tear in the youth's eye, asked: "Can you tell what have you done and learned yesterday?" The youth answered, " I looked at my mother's hand, and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes."' The director asked, "Please tell me your feelings."

The youth replied:
Number 1 - I now appreciate the fact that without my mother, I would not be successful today.
Number 2 -, I now know how to work together with my mother; I realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done.
Number 3 - I know the importance and value of family relationships.

The director said, "This is what I am asking, I want to recruit a person that can appreciate the help of others, a person that understands the challenges of others to get thing done, and a person that would not put money as his only goal in life to be a Manager. You are hired."

Later on, this young person worked very hard, and received the respect of his subordinates, every employees worked diligently and in a team, the company's result improved tremendously.

A child, who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted, develops an  "entitlement mentality" and always put himself first. He is ignorant of others effort. When he starts work, he assumes every person must listen to him, and when he becomes a Manager, he never understands the challenges facing his employee and always blames others.

You can let your kid live in a big house, eat a good meal, learn piano, watch a big screen TV. But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it. After a meal, let them wash the dishes together with their brothers and sisters. It is not because you do not have money to hire a maid, but it is because you want to love them in a right way and give them an appreciation that everything in life does not come easy.

The most important thing we all need to learn is how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty, and learn the ability to work with others to get things done.

Sleep Apnea Found to Cause Loss of Gray Matter & Cognitive Functioning

Those who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have a new worry on their brains to deal with when drifting off. OSA has been found to cause gray matter to shrink, which can lead to cognitive problems with memory and attention. A side effect of OSA is the intermittent deprivation of oxygen that occurs during sleep, which appears to be the antecedent of the gray matter loss.

POEM FOR YOUR WEEK
A Thankful Heart
Poet:  Helen Steiner Rice

Take nothing for granted,
for whenever you do
The "joy of enjoying"
is lessened for you-
For we rob our own lives
much more than we know
When we fail to respond
or in any way show
Our thanks for the blessings
that daily are ours. . .
The warmth of the sun,
the fragrance of flowers
The beauty of twilight,
the freshness of dawn
The coolness of dew
on a green velvet lawn,
The kind little deeds
so thoughtfully done,
The favours of friends
and the love that someone
Unselfishly gives us
in a myriad of ways
Expecting no payment
and no words of praise-
Oh, great is our loss
when we no longer find
A thankful response
to things of this kind,
For the joy of enjoying
and the fullness of living
Are found in the heart
that is filled with thanks-
giving.

THOUGHT FOR YOUR WEEK
Difficulties in Life
By Paxton Hood

There are few positions in life in which difficulties have not to be encountered. These difficulties are, however, our best instructors, as our mistakes often form our best experience.

We learn wisdom from failure more than from success. We often discover what will do by finding out what will not do.

Horne Tooke used to say that he had become all the better acquainted with the country from having the good luck sometimes to lose his way.

Great thoughts, discoveries, inventions have very generally been nurtured in hardship, often pondered over in sorrow and established with difficulty.

POEM FOR YOUR WEEK
In Flanders Fields
Poet: Dr. John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.

Biography of Dr. John McCrae
In April 1915, one of Dr. John McCrae's closest friends and comrades was killed in the trenches near Ypres, Belgium. He was buried in a humble grave with a simple wooden cross. Wild poppies bloomed between the crosses marking the many graves. The next day, unable to help his friend or any of the others who had died, Dr. McCrae gave them a voice through this poem.

On January 28, 1918, John McCrae succumbed to pneumonia and meningitis. He died not knowing the outcome of the war, but with a full understanding of the cost of it. Before he died, Dr. McCrae had the satisfaction of knowing that his poem had been a success. Soon after its publication, it became the most popular poem on the First World War. It was translated into many languages and used on billboards advertising the sale of first Victory Loan Bonds in Canada in 1917.

In part because of the poem's popularity, the poppy was adopted as the Flower of Remembrance. The symbolic poppy and John McCrae's poems are still linked, and the voices of those who have died in war continue to be heard each Remembrance Day.

THOUGHT FOR YOUR WEEK
Enthusiasm a Key to Success
By Catherine Pulsifer

If you approach any task without enthusiasm, the task will be laborious. With enthusiasm, any task becomes so much easier.

Enthusiasm can be contagious. When you work with enthusiastic people, you can't help but be enthusiastic yourself. Enthusiasm spreads like wild fire. Think of people you have worked with. Usually, those who show enthusiasm are fun to work with. And, those who have little enthusiasm usually bring you down.

I have a post-card on my desk taken from "Life's Little Instruction Book" that says: "Be the most enthusiastic and positive person you know!" When I am having a difficult day, I read that card, and it encourages me to change my outlook.

Much has been written about enthusiasm, consider the words of Samuel Smiles,  "Enthusiasm...the sustaining power of all great action."  And the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, "Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm."  And Vince Lombardi whose words may make you smile, but there is true wisdom in them,  "If you are not fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm."

How enthusiastic are you?

Dale Carnegie

"Age may wrinkle the face, but lack of enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."

"You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it there are only alibis."

POEM FOR YOUR WEEK
The Workings of a Successful Mind
by: Devin McMillan, © (2010)

The powers of the mind are not fixed
and science can never explain
What makes a person a success
yet leaves another so mundane
For whatever the mind can conceive
with enough thought it will deliver
There is no goal too extreme
when your mind is a benevolent giver
Take risks in your daily life
or you can conform like the rest
Since rewards are only granted to
those who have passed this test
Know that you have the power
to succeed in numerous ways
Or you can play it safe
being mediocre for all of your days
So keep positive in all you do
wielding your list of goals in hand
Fear not what others say
just focus on your plan
Enjoy every breath that passes
and every task there is to do
Since your actions will only play
the goals you have placed in cue
And always remember to gift
a little of everything you make
For life is defined by giving
and never by what you take

QUOTES for YOUR WEEK:
Blessed are those who can give without remembering and take without forgetting.
Elizabeth Bibesco

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
Winston Churchill

Simply give others a bit of yourself; a thoughtful act, a helpful idea, a word of appreciation, a lift over a rough spot, a sense of understanding, a timely suggestion. You take something out of your mind, garnished in kindness out of your heart, and put it into the other person's mind and heart.
Charles H. Burr

They serve best who give most of themselves. Self is forgotten by the one who serves, for such a one rejoices to see success coming to others through his or her efforts.
James Cash Penney

The measure of life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation.
Peter Marshall

POEM FOR YOUR WEEK
Smiles
Poet: Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Smile a little, smile a little,
As you go along,
Not alone when life is pleasant,
But when things go wrong.
Care delights to see you frowning,
Loves to hear you sigh;
Turn a smiling face upon her,
Quick the dame will fly.

Smile a little, smile a little,
All along the road;
Every life must have its burden,
Every heart its load.
Why sit down in gloom and darkness,
With your grief to sup?
As you drink Fate's bitter tonic
Smile across the cup.

Smile upon the troubled pilgrims
Whom you pass and meet;
Frowns are thorns, and smiles are blossoms
Oft for weary feet.
Do not make the way seem harder
By a sullen face,
Smile a little, smile a little,
Brighten up the place.

Smile upon your undone labor;
Not for one who grieves
O'er his task, waits wealth or glory;
He who smiles achieves.
Though you meet with loss and sorrow
In the passing years,
Smile a little, smile a little,
Even through your tears.

THOUGHT FOR YOUR WEEK
The Art of Living Each Day
By Wilferd A. Peterson

Each day is a lifetime in miniature.

To awaken each morning is to be born again, to fall asleep at night is to die to the day.

In between waking and sleeping are the golden hours of the day.  What we cannot do for a lifetime we can do for a daytime.

Anyone can hold their temper for a day and guard the words they speak.

Anyone can carry his burden heroically for one day.

Anyone can strive to be happy for a day and to spread happiness around.

Anyone can radiate love for a day.

Anyone can rise above fear for a day and meet each new situation with courage.

Anyone can be kind and thoughtful and considerate for a day.

Anyone can endeavor to learn something new each day and mark some growth.

The supreme art of living is to strive to live each day well.

When we fail and fall short, let us forgive ourselves and consider the words of Emerson:  "Finish every day and be done with it.  You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can.  Tomorrow is a new day; you will begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered by your old nonsense."

Live a day at a time and remember that tomorrow is another today.

QUOTES for YOUR WEEK:
Live for today.  Multitudes of people have failed to live for today. What they have had within their grasp today they have missed entirely, because only the future has intrigued them.
William Allen White

You have to count on living every single day in a way you believe will make you feel good about your life - so that if itwere over tomorrow, you'd be content with yourself.
Jane Seymour

Do not look back on happiness, or dream of it in the future. You are only sure of today; do not let yourself be cheated out of it.
Henry Ward Beecher

Today is a new day.  You will get out of it just what you put into it.
Mary Pickford

Some people are making such thorough preparation for rainy days that they aren't enjoying today's sunshine.
William Feather

Today's egg is better than tomorrow's hen.
Proverb

We want to live in the present, and the only history that is worth a tinker's damn is the history we make today.
Henry Ford

We all get 24 hours a day.  It's the only fair thing;it's the only thing that's equal.  It's up to us as to what we do with those 24 hours.
Sam Huff

Today is the only time we can possibly live.
Dale Carnegie

STORY FOR YOUR WEEK
How I Made My Millions
By Catherine Pulsifer

I was working all day and took a break for my supper.  I was flipping through the channels and just happened to come across CNBC's program, How I Made My Millions (http://www.cnbc.com/id/23131910/).  I snickered when I saw the title of the program thinking, oh this must be one of those info commercials that promises to make you millions and most of the time you end up spending lots of money and making nothing.

The program came on and I was truly motivated by watching and listening.  These were ordinary people, like you and me, with good ideas.  They not only talked about their idea, they took action and persevered even though many people laughed at their idea.  The last laugh is, of course, on those who originally laughed. The people featured on this show are now millionaires, and they persevered and took the steps necessary to achieve their success.  Yes, they had setbacks, and rejection, but that did not deter them from continuing.  And, it truly paid off for them.

So often we have a good idea but we don't take action.  Or, we are discouraged at the challenges that face us.  We give up far too easily, we don't persevere.  I can remember when I worked for a large corporation, making a decent salary, but no longer enjoying the work I was doing.  I wanted to work on my websites but I could not see any way to generate an income that would support my family.  After years of frustration, I finally left my corporate job and focused on the websites.  With focus and perseverance, I was able to learn and apply many different theories – some worked, others were disastrous, but I never gave up.  I can't tell you how many times I read the saying on my desk – "persistence prevails when all else fails:. I am now generating a good income – I am not a millionaire – yet – but I continually learn and push the envelope.

The purpose in sharing this story with you is to encourage you to take action on your ideas, and to persist!  Learn from your failures, overcome the challenges; and, as Walt Disney once said, "If you can dream it, you can do it."
